Native to North America.  Found naturally in dry fields and on slopes, it does not require rich soil or much moisture. Plant in the full sun with well-drained soil(especially in winter). Very drought tolerant when established.  Late to emerge in the spring.  Seed pods rupture and spread their seeds in the fall.
