Prefers average, medium moisture, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Drought tolerant. Mulching is beneficial. Can spread by root suckers to cover large areas in good conditions and can be removed if desired. Plant in a protected area that is sheltered by a wall or other structure. Pruning can be done after flowering for light cuts and in late winter -early spring for thinning overgrown sections and cutting off dead stems. Plants benefit from fertilizer from spring through mid-summer.

Fast-growing, herbaceous vine with three-lobed, dark green leaves. Fragrant purple or purple and white flowers have fringed petals and bloom in summer. Fleshy, egg-shaped fruits called maypops appear in July and mature to a yellowish color in fall. Great for trellises, walls and fences.
