Prefers deep, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Tolerates summer heat. Larger plants benefit from some protection from strong winds. Unlike herbaceous peonies the stems do not die back in the winter and should not be cut down. Little pruning is necessary except for removing dead wood or suckers in spring and moderate pruning in fall if the plant becomes leggy. Benefits from some winter protection in the coldest part of its range.
