Prefers rich, fertile, moist, well-drained soils and partial sun to shade. Tolerates full sun only if provided consistently moist soil. Water regularly until established and weekly from then on. Slow to establish but quite vigorous thereafter. Pruning can be done right after leaves start to emerge. Fertilize in spring with a slow release acidic fertilizer. Mulching is beneficial.
