Prefers average to humusy, moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Plants can spread aggressively by rhizomes. Plant in a site protected from heavy wind. Light mulching is beneficial. Once the plant has died back the stems can be cut off in late fall. Deadheading will tidy the plant and prevent any unwanted self-seeding.
